The eerie silence that falls on the world on Saturday…
Where is Jesus? Now that Jesus as died, where is he? The creeds speak of a descent to hell…which I say every way, but I’m not sure what that means exactly. Where does this descent into hell doctrine come from? I really should read more about it. It’s bothering me today. If Christ is in hell today, he’s busy redeeming. If not, where is His spirit? Dead? Truly asleep? With God? No…because he hasn’t ascended to heaven. Hmm…puzzling.

Why do you think it bothers you?
The bible says Jesus descended into the lower parts of the earth. (Eph. 4:9) And it says he preached to those in prison from the days of Noah and led captivity captive. (I Peter 3:19-20)

Gloria.
I’ve often thought that part of his descent into Hell is the breaking of Hell. Hell is defined (in the Westminster Catechism, I believe) as the place or state of the absence of God’s presence. For Jesus to be sent to Hell is for God to go where God is not, which leads to a major “Does Not Compute.” Jesus entering Hell breaks Hell wide open, so to speak.
(But then, by Hell we may in this instance mean Sheol or Hades, the grave, rather than the lake of fire or Gehenna, the place of eternal torment. I’m not sure–more research is needed.)
It is a part of the Creed rarely mentioned by Prots, I’m afraid.
